Don't be afraid of what you don't understand about telephone systems and telecommunications cabling, take the time to learn and in no time, you will understand what structured cabling is.

Structured cabling is a telecommunications infrastructure that is comprised of standardized elements that make up subsystems. Structured cabling is divided into subsystems.

The demarcation point of the structured cabling system is the point where the telephone company connects with the on-site wiring. Basically, where the telephone line connects to your business.

Equipment rooms, also called telecommunications rooms, are the portion of the structured cabling system that the wiring and equipment is housed and begins to service the telephones in the business.

Vertical, sometimes called riser cabling, connects the equipment in each of the equipment or telecommunications rooms. The part of the structured cabling system that lets all of parts talk to each other.

Horizontal wiring, also known as inside wiring or plenum cabling, makes the connection between the equipment room to each individual area where telephones are needed. This part of the structured cabling system typically is hidden from view, either behind walls or through the ceiling. End-users - the telephone users - are connected to the equipment through work-area components using the horizontal cabling system.

Essentially, structured cabling systems are what make it possible to pick up a phone on the 17th floor of a building and make a call to another country, another floor or even the phone in the next office. Large telephone systems cannot operate efficiently without a proper structured cabling system in place.
